How to Make a Handpainted Sign Tutorial

Have you ever stumbled across something on the web and said "They want how much for that?? I could make one myself!" Most often I do just that, but alas, very rarely do I ever get down to work and actually 'make' what ever 'it' happens to be. Painted name signs are one of those things... I love them! Have been browsing through Etsy looking at different styles, etc.. and finally decided to take the plunge. Here is a quick tutorial on how to make your own, custom, hand painted wall plaque, wall art, sign, whatever.. :)

First, you need a board or canvas. I prefer wood. We have a ton of scrap lumber in the basement left over from our home construction. I found a tongue and grove piece, maybe 12" by 28". I'm not exactly sure how big it is, it's hanging up above my sink and I don't want to climb up there and measure. But size doesn't matter.. you'll see.. I wanted black letters on a white background, so, dah, I painted the entire thing white. With acrylics. Again, what I had on hand.

Now, to the computer! :) I typed our name into Microsoft Office and adjusted the font BIG. The size of your font is not limited to the numbers that pop down, you can click on the font size box and type in any number you choose. Did you know that?? Really slick for making fonts BIG. I guesstimated the size I wanted the letters, (if you scale your word processing screen view to be the size of an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper you can see the font at the exact size it'll print. I think the font size I used was 130. Only three letters would print per line.. MOO and then below that was NEY. I changed fonts for the 'est. 2003' just, well, I like that look.

HINT: Print your letters in light grey!! That way you use way less black ink than if they were solid black. You just need to see the edge clearly.. grey works fine. Trim out your letters/words and place them on your board the way you'd like them. Make sure they fit and that you have centered them. Nothing will peeve you more than going through this whole process to find that your work isn't centered.

Next, old school it. Flip your papers over and scribble with the edge of a pencil all over the back making sure to cover where the letters are on the other side. (If you have tracing paper you can use that instead). Place them back on position on your board and tape them down. (they won't slide around on you that way.)

Trace over all the edges of the letters and transfer their outline to the painted surface.

Now comes the harder part for most.. take your time, use a small, well made paint brush with a fine point (crappy cheap doesn't cut it here AT ALL!) When you have a nicely made paint brush in your hand you'll be amazed at the quality of painting you can do!! Fill in all of the letters/numbers as best as possible. Hold your hand steady, water down your paint (acrylics work fine) just slightly to help the paint flow if needed. Don't sweat the waggles and jogs, the next steps can take care of that.

Now, step back and let it dry. OVER NIGHT at least. Nothing will make you swear faster than trying to sand wet paint. It ain't purrrty, I tell ya.

Ok, now you need a sanding block or sandpaper. Go at it!! distress those corners and take off paint! It'll smooth out the surface and you really can't hurt it. It all just adds character.

Wipe with a slightly damp paper towel or a tack cloth to remove the dust. (I used paper towel.. it's what I had on hand) You can choose to leave your piece like that or you can stain it.. which I chose, just to age it a bit more.

Again, using acrylic paint I mixed brown paint and water to the thickness of milky coffee. You want a deeper color? Use less water or a darker brown... I dobbed (technical term) a paper towel in the watery mix and wiped it on the sign and then wiped it off... I did this several times until I reached the effect I was going for. Just a little bit of color in the corners and on the surface to take away the glare of the pure white.

That's it! Attach a hanger to the back or prop it up on a table or shelf . the nice thing about making it? when I get tired of it, I can trash it. Hey, you make the art, you have the right to toss it out! Or change it, or give it away, or break it, or paint over it..

Enjoy!

Free Vintage Christmas Images & Clipart

I never got the chance to post these on my site but really wanted to share them. :) I think they are pretty neat. I pulled them out of a 1950's Time magazine.

So, for those who followed me here, enjoy!

Dragonfly

Yesterday I participated in my first craft show. It was so much fun! I spent a lot of time of the merchandising, signs, color scheme. That is truly the fun part for me. Mind you, I do like creating things as well, but I get bored with the same ol' same ol' all the time. I am definitely a bird of change and graphic design allows me to play with so may colors, styles and formats. I did take some photos, but alas, they are not blog worthy. As you can tell I am fussy about the pics I post here. I'll try to get some images for you and I also have some great tips and sites that I have dug up about craft fairs and the like. Also free or really cheap display ideas. After all, it is about the bottom line, no matter how much we enjoy our craft. I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday weekend! The foliage is just about peaked here in central NH and it is gorgeous! I think we may go and hunt down some pumpkins today.
Enjoy!

Isn't the pretty fellow above just lovely? His blues and green were iridescent, so hard to capture with a camera but you get the idea. :)

Studio Photos

If you have been wondering where I have been, this is it... I finally painted my new studio space, and this time, I took my time. Only that which I truly need, love, and use is here.

Quick tour.. the cutting table under the eaves is set up on bed risers so it is 6" higher than a standard dining table. (I'm short.. so that works fine) The skirt covers a fabulous mess of junk.. maybe I'll show that later. The 'sewing' table is a table we had on our screened porch. I covered it in a white damask vinyl cloth to keep things bright.

I still have space on my shelves to fill but that's a good thing. And, yes, I'm loving my Laura Ashley ironing board cover! It has so much more padding than the cheap ones that come on the boards. The clothe hanging is my cover clothe so adhesives, etc.. don't get on everything.

The clock above once had a tacky puppy dog face on it. The outside color was perfect though, so I took it apart and replaced the face with something much more 'me'.

All of the fabulous, vintage knitting needles my mother in law gave to me. I love having them in a tall glass container so I can see their colors..

More storage.. are you figuring out my color scheme yet? :)

Vintage notions.. I love the look and they are just as functional as 'new' ones.

More storage.. the tins hold a medley of supplies.. I really need to label them though, as I have to open both whenever I am looking for something.
This studio space feels so different than the rest of the house. My goal was bright, fun hues that inspired. I hope they inspire you too..

Knit two, ladybug one, purl two...

I am in love. Yes, it's true... a new new love has stolen my heart and now occupies way too much of my day. You know that 'young love'? The kind that steals you away and you want to spend every minute with them? The kind that makes your mind and heart think of nothing else.. that is what I'm talking about. Two smooth sticks, a ball of yarn and I am in *heaven*. *Sigh* I started taking a knitting class last weekend and it fabulous!! Love, passion, a girlie crush, whatever it is, I am enjoying it most thoroughly!

While I was working the other day on my 'homework' this little ladybug decided to make an appearance.
Oh, you have no idea how wonderful his arrival is! It is a symbol of the coming of Spring!
He crawled all around, checking out my new, fancy-shmancy Crystal Palace bamboo needles. Bamboo is so much nicer than aluminum.. it grips the yarn just enough so I don't drop my stitches. Once I am a little better, I will probably want the smooth metal but for now the warm wood is perfect.
The girls loved watching him run the needles. They cheered him on and when he fell, Momma would have to carefully place him back up on his balance beam.
The magazine below my work is last years Living from Martha Stewart. They really are timeless and I love to read them year after year looking for old 'new' ideas.
I hope that you all are well and doing what you love! If not, find something to fall in love with, again or for the first time. It's so much fun!

My Wee Weensy Life...

I apologize for being gone so long. It is so hard to get out my little box sometimes. It is a nice box though, filled with distractions. I have had tangible friends over for visits. It is so nice to spend time with those I haven't seen in years, but have known most of my life. To be able to give hugs.. I can not hug 'you'.. unfortunately... I like hugs.
My wee weensy life is occasionally pestilent and filled with the trails of family so I come here to hide...
.. and to rest. It is a nice place, caught within four walls and filled with delicate happiness.
I'll be back.. I'm just not sure when my little box will let me out.

Two Sides to Every Button...

The next time you work on an art piece, scrapbook or greeting try looking at the other side of things.

Take a look at the back side of your buttons.
I love the forgotten bits of fabric and thread that sometimes get left behind.

Each worn hook and hole has so many stories to tell.

The back of my button with the clovers is stamped 1883.
I didn't notice that until this photo shoot.

Don't forget broken buttons, they have a story too. You can tell what a button is made from once they are broken. Vegetable ivory or glass.

The back of shell buttons have so much more texture than the front.

My favorite button in my collection is the broken jet glass button shown above. It is so tiny and the broken side sparkles fiercely in the light.

Above is a close up of a vegetable ivory button, split open by time. You'd never know that under that dark exterior is a pale center! There are after all, at least two sides to every button.

I dreamt of buttons..

Over at the Button Floozies we are having our first annual International Button Week! Here is some eye candy of button lovelies I have posted in the past years. I don't have the time to photograph new buttons today, but hopefully by tomorrow or Thursday I'll have a photo journey through buttonland! Check back! As the 'first floozy' I am so happy to have found so many other like minded, fabulous, fun ladies!! Thank you all for joining in the fun and helping to raise $$ for the American Cancer Society!!

Afghans!

OK, as some of you might of noticed, I am going through an identity crisis right now. My blog keeps flip flopping and if you come back in a little while, I'm sure, again, it will be changed. :) Sorry, I love change, thrive on it actually, and since most everything in life is the same right now, I'm changin' up my blog. Again. Keeps things fresh! You never know what you're gonna get here!

Anyhooo.. I have been on the search for an afghan. Not just any afghan, but a bright colored one with a black border. (We have a lot of black, reds, golds, and greens in our home) I had clipped out several inspiration pics from magazines and was keeping them in case I needed to break down and make own. Well, I didn't have to! After loosing one on Ebay (I tried to swipe it last second and Ebay didn't take my bid! Aaahh! I hate it when that happens..) I did finally manage to win the bid on one a few weeks ago. It is beautiful!! 100% wool, vintage, needed just slight repair, and 80% of the price went to a homeless shelter. (which is a good thing, because it was foolishly expensive) Oh, but it was so worth it! I love my afghan! ♥ Thank you sweetheart. (He is the one who told me to keep bidding, I would have stopped early on.)

The top picture is of my afghan in the rocker in our 'red' living room. The two pillows in front of it are a few I made this season. My favorite is the small plaid pillow with the leaf. I am finding peace in hand stitching right now. It brings sense of satisfaction to make things for my home, not just to buy them. The last two pics are the inspiration clippings I kept.

Have a lovely weekend!

Busy hands...

I have been busy working on crafty bits to decorate my home for the upcoming season of 'Boo!'. the mood has struck, and if I don't go with it, I'll never get anything done! so far I have made several (4) pillows (embroidered and appliqued), painted two grungy boxes, assembled a witchy portrait, created a ghostie from some vintage lace and antique Victorian jet buttons and made several rag garlands. There are so many more ideas in my folder! So this is where I have been lately.. creating for my family and home. It is more enjoyable than creating things to sell.
I hope at some point to post some of the templates that I created.
Hope everyone else is enjoying some creative time!
